Can you believe that it is almost July? We can’t believe that we’ll be grilling hot dogs on the beach while watching some fireworks before we know it! As Fourth of July marks the official start of summer, it goes without saying that we our in full summer swing mode here at Michael’s Consignment. We love a good holiday, and there’s just something so fun about being patriotic and dressed in red, white, and blue for Independence Day! From a fun family BBQ to a day at the beach with friends, there’s something festive to wear for everyone at Michael’s.
Twenty years ago, HBO debuted Sex and the City, a show about four women living vicariously in New York City, with Manolos on their feet and a Cosmopolitan in their right hand. This show wasn’t just a show, it was a lifestyle representing single fabulous women living out their dreams in New York City. We were there with Carrie when she received the post it note break up all the way to her “something blue” Manolo Blahnik heels when she finally married Mr. Big. From brunching to babies, Sex and the City covered everything about being a woman in the early 2000’s.
Walking into the Medieval and Byzantine Art area of the Met feels as if you are walking into an old monumental church. Crowds solemnly look up at the raised platforms of glittering Dolce & Gabbana and Versace garments like saints coming down from heaven. The overall exhibition is incredibly dramatic, featuring many show-stopping looks from designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier and Christian Lacroix. The entire vibe is almost eerie, with the sounds of church organ music that plays as you walk through the various areas.
Family is at the core of what we do here at Michael’s, since 1954! On Mother’s Day especially we would love to take a moment to share some of our favorite things about our own mothers, whether they are far from home or they work alongside us every day (like our President and Vice President, Laura and Tammy!). So today, we are taking a moment to shout out motherhood and give these important women in our lives the spotlight. These women have raised us and shaped us into the people we are today, and we don’t need just one day to thank them for everything they’ve done. Hey fellow Michael’s Girls, today we’re coming to you live from our new location at 1125 Madison Avenue! We are so excited to be opening tomorrow in our new home at 84th St. One of the most exciting things about our new location is that we are literally footsteps away from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a New York City staple. It’s so surreal to think that just last night we were mere meters away from the majestic celebrity-filled iconic Met Gala red carpet.
Since the turn of the century, my family has believed in sustainability and “going green”. Way before it was a thing, we were doing it. My great-great grandfather Simon was a tailor in the late 1800’s. He could not believe the amount of beautiful garments that were often abandoned at his lower east side shop in NYC. He did not have the heart to toss them in the trash and instead believed that someone would love to have these pieces in their closets.
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! Onward and uptown! Michael's is on the move. We are leaving our wonderful home of 64 years and moving north to a fabulous ground floor location, 4 blocks up on Madison. 1041 Madison provided an excellent environment during our formative years and a wonderful place to grow up and mature. Now that we have become a destination business with clients and consignors from around the world, it is time to take our place at street level on Madison Avenue so we can better serve our clientele.
Another season has come and gone, and although we are looking ahead to spring we can’t help but crush on the newest looks from this past week’s Fall/Winter 2018 New York Fashion Week.The runways this year were full of show stopping looks, and very bold trends. Today we’ll be sharing three of our favorite trends from the upcoming season and how you can wear them yourself with the help of Michael’s.
Tammy and I recently had the extreme pleasure of attending the Christian Dior exhibition at the Musée des Art Décoratifs in Paris. The exhibit celebrated 70 years of The House of Dior. The exhibition runs from July 5, 2017 through January 7, 2018. Clearly Mr. Dior was the star but the supporting cast of Yves Saint Laurent, Grazia Chiuri, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre, John Galliano and Raf Simons could not be ignored.
Love it or hate it, Valentine's Day is a hop, skip and jump away. If you hate it, then it’s time to jump on Bumble and get yourself a honey… If you love it, then we have plenty of info to make sure your dreamy night ends up delicious and steamy. Call it a Hallmark holiday or a good excuse to have a killer meal and buy a new sick outfit! Are you coupling up for cuffing season or rolling downtown in a taxi packed with your girl squad?
